Five years have passed since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan. In a country handed over to the Taliban following a twenty-year U.S./NATO occupation, women are being systematically erased from public life while the world's nations are increasingly normalizing relations with the Taliban. Afghan human rights advocate Shaharzad Akbar stated, “Afghanistan is the country experiencing the world’s most severe women’s rights crisis.
Legal accountability alone cannot change the situation in Afghanistan. However, it can create a significant tool for exerting pressure on the Taliban.”
