Who owns the sea: Cage fishing in the Black Sea and the struggle for a livelihood

As opportunities for independent or family-run production dwindle, some small-scale fishermen are turning to wage labour in other sectors or in the growing aquaculture industry. Whilst a new, capital-intensive, export-oriented sector is growing on the one hand, on the other hand the material conditions of small-scale fishing are eroding, giving rise to new processes of proletarianisation. For workers employed in marine cages, there are serious occupational health and safety risks.
