Journalism is also under intense pressure and siege in Turkey, where the space for democracy and freedoms is narrowing by the day. Less than a year after TELE 1 was taken off air, Halk TV was also seized. It is not only television channels that are being shut down; online news sites such as T24 are also being blocked.
While journalists continue to be imprisoned one after another, thousands of social media accounts are also being unlawfully censored. This also means the destruction of the public’s right to information. Professional press organisations called on citizens to gather in public squares in many cities at 14.00 on Saturday, 24 , against the detention and imprisonment of journalists, the appointment of trustees to media organisations and access blocks.
